We were called in by main contractors Amco to advise on the problem. Open cut wasn’t an option as the line is in regular use meaning that a trenchless solution was essential.
Our engineers surveyed the site and recommended installing a new 225mm ID gravity sewer using guided auger boring and Naylor Denlok clayware, and then stabilising the old culvert with cementitious grout.
After installing the new sewer, a 63mm ID perforated pipe was installed at the roof height of the old culvert which was then used as a grout tube. Cementitious grout was injected into the void to stabilise the ground and fill any voids in the old culvert.
As the site was adjacent to a pig farm, we had to ensure that hygiene on the farm wasn’t compromised, so vehicle washing baths were installed at the entrance to prevent possible contamination of the herd.
