Timber headings connect the new Rolls building to the public sewer network

18 Jan 2010

The new Rolls Building, at 110 New Fetter Lane in the city of london, will house the chancery, commercial and TCC jurisdictions of the High Court. The 11 storey building provides 31 courtrooms, 11 hearing rooms and 67,000 sq. ft. of high quality office space.

The New Rolls Building is in the heart of the City of London, one of the most inconvenient locations for utilities contractors to work in. Road closures for open cut working are just not possible, so trenchless techniques are the only option. The new complex required two connections to the public sewer network. The first was a 10 metre section of 225mm ID and the second was 25 metres of 300mm ID.

We recommended constructing two timber headings, one of which would be launched from the basement of the building and the other from outside the building. Both headings were to be driven out to the brick lined public sewer under the adjacent street. The first task was to install a 4 metre deep launch shaft in the street outside the building. The 2.4 metre diameter caisson shaft was sunk between Christmas Day 2008 and New Year’s Day 2009 to minimise impact on traffic and pedestrians.

The first sewer was installed in May 2009 and the second in September 2009. The heading launched from the basement required the spoil to be stored in the basement and then removed from site during night working.
No matter how technologically advanced or prestigious the project, this traditional technique, which has been used since Roman times, enables new pipes to be connected to the public sewer network.
