Expandit in action at a new Liverpool dock development

Millenium Estates

Locaton: Prince's Dock, Liverpool

Technique: Expandit Pipe Bursting

Main Contractor: Laing O'Rourke

An unusual aspect of the job was that the pipe undergoing bursting was a new and untouched, clayware sewer. Due to changing development plans, its diameter was now too small and Perco was called in to install a larger pipe.

A small launch pit was excavated at the southern end of a 40m leg of the sewer, running under the Prince’s Parade road. The reception point for the mole was an existing manhole close to the tower block’s digester tank pit.

Perco installed Snap-it segmental pipes, in 790mm lengths and 250mm OD, jacked into place behind the Expandit bursting head. This pipe is manufactured in a number of water industry-approved polyethylene grades and SDR, and uses snap together jointing, sealed by an EPDM rubber O-ring.

Due to the controlled hydraulic action of the mole restricting ground heave, no damage was caused to the roadway above and traffic was unaffected.
