Sewer slip lining avoids shoppers in Newcastle, Staffordshire

Severn Trent Water

Locaton: Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire

Technique: Slip lining

Main Contractor: Fitzgerald

Sub-Contractor: Perco Engineering Services

For Perco this was a straightforward exercise of upgrading sewers by slip-lining with Snapit MDPE pipe. However, by working from manholes on roadside grass verges and on a construction site, it was possible to reduce disruption to passing traffic.

Potential access problems for customers using a Morrison’s supermarket were also minimised, by completing the nearby section of the sewer upgrade during quieter weekend hours.

The existing drainage system at the location was considered to be more than adequately sized to serve a new block of flats under development. This was because the storm water drain and foul sewer ran from an old industrial estate. With capacity to spare, Perco was able to upgrade the drains to modern standards without needing to upsize them from 225mm.

Extending for 150m and running in parallel underneath two roads, the two pipes were inspected and then slip-lined in 150mm Snapit. Grouting the annulus between the new and old pipes completed the job.
