Anglian Water
Locaton: Oundle, Cambridgeshire
Technique: Timber headings
Main Contractor: Danaher & Walsh
Passing between two houses in Oundle, near Peterborough, this culvert had been causing drainage problems for a couple of years. Approximately 3m below ground level, it ran diagonally, from a manhole at the front of one property to the rear of another, making excavation impossible without certain structural damage.
Perco was brought in by Danaher and Walsh, Anglian Water’s contractor for the work, to construct a heading. With the manhole excavated to create a launch pit, the timber heading was driven out 15m.
Although the properties had experienced ground movement in the past, Perco’s tunnelling was completed without causing any measurable movement and while the residents were on holiday. The culvert was replaced using 300mm Densleeve vitreous clay pipe.
