Microtunnelling installs new sewer

Severn Trent Water

Locaton: Newcastle Under Lyme, Staffordshire

Technique: Microtunnelling

Main Contractor: Whitehouse Construction

Sub-Contractor: Perco Engineering Services

Working on a flood alleviation project for Severn Trent Water’s framework contractor, Whitehouse Construction, the microtunnelling machine encountered hard rock and multiple fault lines at the Marina Drive location.
We had just six weeks to complete two drives, including one 82m long, installing 600mm ID Naylor Denlok clayware. The trenchless approach was taken due to the depth of the water source and the proximity of sewers, high voltage cables and other buried services in the residential area.

The team worked 12 hours, seven days per week, using an Iseki TCC Unclemole 780, at a depth of 7m below ground level.

Although a road closure was necessary for the general flood alleviation works, the minimum of disruption was caused to local residents due to the low noise, low vibration technology that we used on the project.
